[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Kerry Schafer] colors outside the lines

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Wakeworld?

[Kerry Schafer] Sure! Our heroine, Vivian, is a dreamshifter who also happens to have dragon blood running through her veins. This means she can usually go anywhere she wants in Wakeworld, Dreamworld, or the Between, but somebody has locked her into Wakeworld after taking her lover, Zee, captive in Between. (Turns out this somebody is a Black Dragon with evil intentions for all the worlds, but Vivian doesn’t know that yet. Shhh. Don’t tell.) She teams up with a rogue dreamshifter to find a way past whatever is blocking her, but is going to have to accept the dragon tendencies she hates if she wants to keep some very bad stuff from going down.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Kerry Schafer] You know that weird space between dreaming and being awake? Where you’re not really fully either, and the reality of your day gets sort of all muddled up with things that didn’t really happen? That’s where the idea for the Between came from. As for the characters, I can never explain how that happens for me. I sit down and start writing and they build themselves, one word at a time.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

[Kerry Schafer] Playing around in Dreamworld and the Between. I loved letting Vivian practice her dreamshifting, and I gave Zee have some adventures in the Between that remind me a bit of my beloved King Arthur tales. It was also great fun developing the mythology of the worlds.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Which scene was the most difficult to write?

[Kerry Schafer] The scenes where there is tension between Vivian and Zee were hard for me. I really wanted to keep this subtle and to show their emotion by things like facial expression and body tension, since neither of them are really talking about the problem. That was tricky and took a lot of rewriting.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Kerry Schafer] Me? Definitely The Bug, by Dire Straits

“Well, it’s a strange old game, you learn it slow

One step forward and it’s back to go

You’re standing on the throttle, you’re standing on the brakes

In the groove till you make a mistake

Sometimes you’re the windshield

Sometimes you’re the bug

Sometimes it all comes together, baby

Sometimes you’re a fool in love…”

In case you don’t know the wonder of Dire Straits, here’s a youtube link:

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

[Kerry Schafer] My smart phone! It has all my people in it. And my music.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Kerry Schafer] Wine glass (empty), notebook, pen. And my laptop of course, but that makes four.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name some books that you enjoyed recently.

[Kerry Schafer] The Sword Edged Blonde, by Alex Bledsoe. The Collegia Magica Trilogy by Carol Berg. The latest Jack Reacher novel.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Kerry Schafer] Unfortunately, if I’m not writing I’m usually either sleeping or at the day job. When I do have free time, the first thing on my list is to read a great book. I don’t get nearly enough time for reading. I also enjoy yoga, baking things I shouldn’t be eating, and just hanging out with my Viking.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Kerry Schafer] I hang out on Twitter and FB and am always happy to connect with readers! If you @ me on Twitter or send me a message on Facebook I will always do my best to respond. I also do check and respond to email regularly.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

“Schafer gives us heroes we can root for and a world that twists and turns like an Escher print so that nothing is quite what it seems.” —Anne Bishop

Vivian Maylor doesn’t know much about her heritage as a dreamshifter, but she is certain of one thing: she is the last of her kind. The last person left to defend the boundaries of the dreamworld. But something wild has been unleashed in Vivian. The dragon that she transformed into in order to save her family while in the dreamworld has followed her home, living just under the surface of her skin, waiting to break free. Can she control the beast? Does she even want to? And can she make a life together with a man who has spent night of his life battling dragons?

Weston Jennings always feared his sadistic father and refused to learn to control his abilities as a dreamshifter. After the tragic loss of his family, he embraced a life of solitude, retreating deep into the woods of the Pacific Northwest. When a terrible mistake leads to a young girl’s death, Weston’s guilt drives him to his former home, where he encounters the last thing he ever thought he would find—another shifter.

Now Vivian and Weston must work together to defeat a new threat to the dreamworld, a sorceress seeking the promise of eternal life held within. To stop her, Vivian may need to risk everything she holds dear.
