Novella Review: Mercy by Jan Coffey

Mercy (Entangled Ever After)

May Contain Spoilers

From Amazon:

Julia Klein’s life has begun to unravel—her daughter Amy has been suspended from school, Julia is about to lose her job, and her boyfriend Garrett is being transferred thousands of miles away. Overwhelmed, she and Amy leave for a weekend at a rambling old colonial inn. Julia never suspects that Garrett, desperate to find a way to keep Julia in his life, has decided to surprise her by joining them. Nor does she expect her daughter to befriend a mischievous ghost…or that she herself would be possessed by the malevolent spirit of a long-dead mother.

As a dark secret emerges, Julia, Amy, and Garrett find themselves pitted in a fight for survival against a savage presence that intends to resurrect/repeat/relive a horrible crime committed two centuries ago. And this time, Amy and Julia will be the victims.

Zowie!!  Mercy is a great Halloween read!  I wasn’t expecting much, and in fact only picked this novella up because it’s short and I thought I could polish it off fairly quickly.  I did!  But because I couldn’t put it down once I started it.  It’s creepy and the pacing is unrelenting!  Good thing it’s short, because my heart couldn’t have taken much more!  I am usually not a fan of ghost stories, and even though this is fairly predictable, it’s well written and engaging because the characters are so personable.

Interview with Andrea Laurence, Author of A Beauty Uncovered

Please give a warm welcome to Andrea Laurence. Andrea is visiting the virtual offices to chat about her latest release A  Beauty Uncovered.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Andrea] I would describe myself as sarcastic, smart, determined, ambitious and creative. I’m also tall with naturally curly hair and a shoe fetish.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about A Beauty Uncovered?

[Andrea] A Beauty Uncovered is the second book in my Secrets of Eden miniseries. It picks up where Undeniable Demands leaves off, focusing on Brody, the most mysterious of the four Eden boys. He’s forced to deal with a temporary secretary while his usual employee is on an extended vacation and he gets a lot more than he bargains for.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Andrea] Brody was a character that I felt very strongly about wanting to do. I wanted to do a scarred and reclusive hero. He’s a billionaire, the brilliant CEO of a software empire, but he’s extremely self-conscious and unsure of himself when it comes to dealing with people instead of machines. The perfect counterpart for him was Samantha. She’s super feminine, very confident of herself and her looks, and she’s the ultimate fixer. She sees his life as a problem just waiting for her to fix.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Samantha?

[Andrea] Sparkly, Fashionable, Meddling

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Brody had a theme song, what would it be?

[Andrea] There’s two that are hard to choose between. They’re both on Brody & Sam’s playlist that I used while writing the book. First is Broken by Seether (Featuring Amy Lee). The second is Mad World by Gary Jules. They’re both so haunting and emotional.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Brody is never without.

[Andrea] His smartphone. He doesn’t communicate with people in person, so without it, he’s lost.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find on Samantha’s bathroom?

[Andrea] You would never find cheap makeup or skin care products. No scrunchies. No at-home hair dye. She invests in quality products for quality results.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Brody’s greatest regret?

[Andrea] Probably the day he walked into the garage and sent his father into the rage that permanently scarred him.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Andrea] This one is hard. If I had to name a person, this might seem silly, but Walt Disney. He was a man what wasn’t afraid to dream. He was ambitious enough to work hard and get his vision out into the world. His standards for himself and others were sky high. He left a legacy behind that anyone would be proud of. Not the money or the parks or the films, but the laughter and wonder he brought to the lives of millions of people, even after he was gone. He has always inspired me to dream big and make magic happen. I have no illusions that I will ever write a critically important book (I hope I am never required reading in high school) but I will die happy knowing that I entertained even one person.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Andrea] Candy (usually M&Ms or Jelly Bellys), Caffeine (diet coke or unsweetened tea) and the iTunes playlist for the book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on A Beauty Uncovered?

[Andrea] Looking at pictures of Matt Bomer. I decided early on that he was my character inspiration, so I started collecting some pictures of him on my Pinterest boards. Then I would find myself just looking at him. So pretty!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Andrea]  I read a lot of great books, but the last book I absolutely raved about… you know, the whole Harry Potter series has to be my answer. The amount of – not just creativity and talent – but planning and focus that went into writing that detailed of a series just blows my mind. Especially the way so many insignificant things from the earlier books came back at the end of the series in such a critical way that you knew she had it all laid out from the very beginning. I’m doing a very simple four book series and I can’t imagine doing one as long and complicated as Harry Potter. She created a whole world that I was immediately immersed in. Perfect.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Andrea] Skye O’Malley was my romance gateway book. I read it in my early teens and just loved the mix of romance, adventure and history. I learned more about Elizabethan England reading that series than I did in school.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Andrea] I used to have hobbies, but working two full time jobs has pushed that to the side. When I can, I like to scrapbook. I also like to unwind with a good movie or night watching the History Channel. Yeah, I’m a wild one. Most of all, I enjoy hanging out with my fellow writer friends. We have all sold books in the eight years we’ve been friends and there’s nothing better than a night talking and laughing with my ladies.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Andrea] Lots of ways! First, I have a fanpage on Facebook: I also have an active Twitter account : I have Pinterest boards about all my different books and other fun stuff: You can also send me an email via my webpage:  That page has links to all my accounts and my PO box if you want to send me actual snail mail.
