Your heart misleads you.
That’s what my friends and family say.
But I love Noah.
And he loves me.
We met and fell in love in the sleepy farming community of Meadowview, while we rode our horses together through the grassy fields and in those moments in each other’s arms.
It should be
forever, easy.
But it won’t be.
Because he’s Amish.
And I’m not.

I am a fan of forbidden love stories, especially if the major obstacle is cultural.  When I saw the tour invite for Temptation and Belonging, I quickly signed up.  I wondered how Rose and Noah would find their HEA when so many road blocks stand in their way. Their families are against their relationship, so much so that Noah’s parents are willing to send him away to live with relatives in Pennsylvania.  They want  to split them up and force him to find a more suitable wife among his own kind.  I was wondering if Rose would give up her privileged life to be with Noah.  I know that I would have a hard time letting go of my electronics and gadgets, so I hope the zombie apocalypse is a long time in coming (at least until my Kindle is solar powered).

I am not sure how I feel about Temptation.  It’s a compelling YA romance, but I thought the resolution was over simplified.  Rose and her family have just moved from Cincinnati to a more rural part of Ohio, and after meeting Noah, she is smitten.  So is he.  Neither has met anyone like the other, and neither can stop themselves from thinking about the other.  Noah has never met a girl as wild and outspoken as Rose, and she fascinates him, unlike the Amish girls he’s expected to pick a bride from.  Rose finds Noah gorgeous, and she’s impressed by his maturity.

Noah is a guy who knows exactly what he wants out of life; a loving wife, a large family, and his own land to work.  He loves his way of life and can’t imagine living any other way.  After he and Rose fall for each other, he’s determined to convince her to convert.  Though I hate to admit it, his reasons for her converting as opposed to him made a whole lot of sense.  His community would help them build a house, his parents would give him some land, and he would continue to work for the family business.  Those opportunities just would not be there if he left the Amish community.

Now, while I understood Noah’s thinking, my upbringing didn’t allow me to agree with it.  Rose would be giving up her dream of becoming a vet in order to marry Noah and start a family, far sooner than she ever imagined she would.  She would be joining a society where she would have little to no freedoms, and she would be giving up everything she owned.  I wouldn’t be able to do it, and I honestly don’t know many people who could.  Noah’s parents caution him, fearing that Rose will grow to resent him for giving up her former life.  I think he would have done himself, and Rose, a favor to have listened to them.

I enjoyed the alternating points of view, especially Noah’s.  The book was impossible to put down after the buggy accident, which was raw and emotional.  The end also left me conflicted. Rose still thinks she can get Noah to change for her, which made me think that her attempts to become Amish weren’t really sincere. Overall, this is an engaging story and I want to read the next book in the series.

Interview with Kimberly P. Chase, Author of The Apollo Academy

Please give special guest Kimberly P Chase a warm welcome this morning.  She’s here to chat about her new release The Apollo Academy.

[Magna Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Kimberly P. Chase] Shy. Cookie Monster. Pilot. Mother. Writer. Reader. Shoeaholic.

[Magna Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about The Apollo Academy?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Sure! The Apollo Academy is the first of a four book new adult science fiction series. It’s an action packed story of love, discovery, and survival. I’ve had people say it’s Top Gun meets Gattaca meets New Adult. You can watch the book trailer here:

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Kimberly P. Chase] I feel like I’ve been collecting pieces of The Apollo Academy my entire life. From nights spent looking through a telescope, Space Camp, flying lessons, to reading science fiction books. Little pieces of this story were collecting in my mind until one day I finally decided it was time to write it all down. It wasn’t until I finished writing TAA that I realized this was the book I’d been wanting to find in my own reading pile. A book about a young woman who loved to fly. One that wasn’t historical. One that was fun and sexy….The Apollo Academy stemmed from this idea. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book about astronaut training that’s been done in a fun, young way.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Aurora?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Determined. Petite. Pilot.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Aurora is never without.

[Kimberly P. Chase] The airplane necklace her father gave her the day she was accepted into The Apollo Academy.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things would you find in Aurora’s bedroom?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Lots of shoes! Old books. Flight gear.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Kimberly P. Chase] I find inspiration everywhere! Magazines, documentaries, music, books, art, people, movies etc.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Kimberly P. Chase] My computer, pretzel M&M’s (if I have them), and a red bull.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on The Apollo Academy?

[Kimberly P. Chase] The internet! It’s evil, I say! Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, DeviantArt, Blogs, and the list goes on. So many things to distract you!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Throne of Glass by S.J. Mass. It’s a YA Fantasy that I just can’t stop thinking about!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Oh, that’s a tough one. But if I had to choose, I’d go with Mars by Ben Bova. It’s the first book that really got me into science fiction.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Kimberly P. Chase] Hanging out with my family, reading, eating, flying, and watching movies.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

Becoming the first female pilot to train as an astronaut for the Apollo Academy is exactly the chance for which she has been waiting. Interview with Nina Croft, Author of Losing Control and Giveaway!

Please welcome Nina Croft to the virtual offices this morning! Nina is celebrating the release of Losing Control, and has a gift card you can win!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Nina Croft] Animal lover, sun worshipper, drinker of wine, obsessive reader and writer.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Losing Control?

[Nina Croft] Losing Control is a ‘friends to lovers’ story about Kim and her best friend and boss, Jake. Kim was formally in an abusive relationship, which left her with a deep need to be in control of her own life. She never intends to hand that control to a man again—not even her best friend.

But Jake wants to be more than friends, much more. Somehow, he needs to find a way past the barriers Kim has put up and teach her that control is a two-way thing. And that losing control can actually be a whole lot of fun.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Nina Croft] I love bodyguard stories and wanted to write a series based on them. But I also love strong heroines so I decided to make the stories about female bodyguards. The series is about three friends, who all work for Knight Security, and how they find love while protecting their men. It’s also about women who want to be in control of their own lives and how they balance that with falling in love with some very alpha guys.

Jake the hero of Losing Control, is the CEO of Knight Securities, and Kim is his best friend and employee.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Kim?

[Nina Croft] Honest, confrontational, stubborn.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Jake had a theme song, what would it be?

[Nina Croft] This is hard. I don’t actually listen to music while I write – let me go put the iPod on shuffle for inspiration… I’m going with – You do Something to Me by Paul Weller, because it reflects how Jake feels about Kim.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Kim is never without.

[Nina Croft] Her lock pick. Just in case…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Jake’s bathroom?

[Nina Croft] Hair gel, pink towels, a shower cap.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Jake’s greatest regret?

[Nina Croft] That he didn’t meet Kim before she met her horrible husband.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Nina Croft] Probably the books I read, but I also get a lot of inspiration from my surroundings. If I’m ever stuck, then I’ll often go for a walk or a ride and just let the scenery work its magic.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Nina Croft] An idea, an outline and lots of coffee.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on  Losing Control?

[Nina Croft] Probably my dog Grunt. He has this endearing habit of nudging me every few minutes just in case it’s time for a walk.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked  your socks off?

[Nina Croft] I’m currently working my way through the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris, again (just finished watching season 4 on DVD!) and absolutely loving them.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Nina Croft] The earliest book I remember being excited about was, The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell, about the wild horses in Australia (lots of horsey romance!) I loved that book—I still have a copy.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Nina Croft] Obviously reading. And I have a whole load of dogs so we walk a lot, and a horse so I ride most days (a good pastime for plotting.) Otherwise, I’m very fond of lying around in the sun, admiring the scenery and drinking wine.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
