A harrowing story of love and survival.

In a future of scarce resources, where the possession of gas and diesel is punishable by death, a teenage boy and a pregnant girl must save their impoverished family. They risk their lives on a terrifying journey to sell stolen fuel on the black market.

Mary surprised Joe by knocking his arms away. She was stronger than she looked. Then she swept her legs off the bed and sprang to her feet. She took two steps and turned to face him as if to prove there was nothing wrong with her. But there was definitely something wrong. She wavered a moment. Her already white face turned ghostly. Her eyelids trembled. She seemed to realize she was becoming faint, and what that meant.

“I’m fine,” she said. “You don’t have to go.”

Joe got ready to catch her in case she fell, but somehow she held herself steady.

“It’s okay,” Joe said. “Just sit down. I will go find some food.”

Joe inched toward her. He was afraid to grab her again because she might try to wrench free once more and really fall. When she coughed, her little shoulders jerked and her round stomach jumped. Her head was drooped low and her hair hung down so he couldn’t see her face at all.

“Come on, lay down,” Joe said.

She didn’t move. Joe stepped toward her, but before he could put his arms around her, she tilted forward and rested the crown of her head against his chest. He slid his arms along the sides of her hard belly and around her waist. Then he shifted her toward the bed again. She moved like a bundle of empty sacks in his arms. He set her gently on the bed before he bent down to lift her feet onto the sheets.

After he sat in the chair, Mary asked him, “What if you don’t come back?”

“That’s not going to happen,” Joe said.

“How do you know?”

“I just know. You have to trust me.”

Interview with Renee Ryan, Author of The Outlaw’s Redemption

Please welcome special guest Renee Ryan to the virtual offices today.  Renee is here to chat about her latest release, The Outlaw’s Redemption.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Renee Ryan] Author of historical and contemporary inspirational romance, wife, mother, cat wrangler, fan of all things Jane Austen, P90X graduate

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about The Outlaw’s Redemption?

[Renee Ryan] Here’s the back cover blub:

Who would guess the most formidable adversary former gunslinger Hunter Mitchell ever faced would be a fiery, violet-eyed female? Now that he’s served his time, Hunter intends to claim the daughter he’s only just discovered. While the law is on his side this time, his daughter’s devoted aunt certainly isn’t.

Annabeth Silks can’t bear to let a onetime outlaw take little Sarah. As the daughter of an infamous madam, she knows the hardship of an unstable home. But every glimpse of Hunter’s reformed character dares Annabeth to look beyond his past…to the family and future she never thought to find.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Renee Ryan] I’ve always wanted to explore why some of us choose to embrace the good inside us, while others can’t seem to shake the bad.  What makes some of us self-destructive and others follow a more righteous path?  Is it predestined in our DNA, or something that happens to us along the way?  Cain and Abel are prime examples of this human conundrum.  My version of Abel was Logan Mitchell, the hero of THE LAWMAN CLAIMS HIS BRIDE.  Logan’s brother, Hunter, started out as Cain.  Thanks to a restlessness he couldn’t shake, Hunter hadn’t lived a good life as a young man.  He left home young, willingly took the wrong path as soon as he was gone, and made bad decision upon bad decision.  Can a man like that be redeemed?  I wanted to find out, and so THE OUTLAW’S REDEMPTION was born.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Hunter?

[Renee Ryan] Resolved, reformed, repentant

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Annabeth had a theme song, what would it be?

[Renee Ryan] The Only Way I Know by Jason Aldean (with Luke Bryan and Eric Church).  She’s a fighter, knows how to dig deep, and never give up.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Annabeth is never without.

[Renee Ryan] The chip on her shoulder.  She’s the daughter of the most infamous madam in town.  She lost her job back east because of her mother, has suffered countless humiliations since, and yet her mother is her mother.  Annabeth loves her dearly, but doesn’t want anyone to know they’re related.  Well, that is, until she sees her mother from Hunter’s eyes.  He shows her that everyone is worthy of redeeming, even outlaws and madams.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Hunter’s bedroom?

[Renee Ryan] Alcohol (he learned his lesson on that one), a Colt revolver (same goes), photographs (the past is the past)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Annabeth’s greatest regret?

[Renee Ryan] Not getting to know her half-sister before she died.  Now, it’s too late.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Renee Ryan] Movies, movies, movies.  Well-written, badly written, the ones in between, I find inspiration in all of them.  I walk away with either the desire to rise to the level of excellence I admire in the well told stories, or vow to avoid the pitfalls I cringed over in the bad ones.  I love going to the actual movie-theater, too, love sitting in the darkened, cool room.  The large screen in front of me, a bag of popcorn on my lap, it’s an instant filling up of the creative well.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Renee Ryan] My laptop, a Diet Coke within reach and utter silence.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Renee Ryan] Captivating, by John and Stasi Eldredge.  It’s a non-fiction book that explores the heart of a woman.  It’s an amazing insight into why women do the things they do, think the things they think, and choose the men they choose.  I walked away from the book with one word in my mind…wow.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Renee Ryan] Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.  Then I discovered her book, Persuasion.  I haven’t looked back since.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Renee Ryan] Exercise, go to movies and, of course, read.  I don’t know any writer who isn’t also an avid reader.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Renee Ryan] I’m on Facebook and Twitter, the links are on my website, which is the quickest, easiest way to reach me at:

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
