L S Murphy is visiting the virtual offices today to talk about her new book, Reaper. Annnddd!! She brought along a digital copy for one of you to win! Please give her a warm welcome.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[L S Murphy] I’m a country girl turned city slicker. It’s like having a split personality sometimes. I’m also a co-rep for the Southern Illinois region of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a member of the St. Louis Writer’s Guild.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Reaper?
[L S Murphy] Reaper is the story of Quincy Amarante, who learns on her sixteenth birthday that she’s destined to become a grim reaper.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[L S Murphy] The concept was a what if question that popped into my head one day. What if you found out you were destined to become a grim reaper? Quincy’s character was an off-shoot of that original question. What if you were the queen of your high school…
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Quincy?
[L S Murphy] Popular, beautiful, snob
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Quincy had a theme song, what would it be?
[L S Murphy] Popular by The Veronicas
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Quincy won’t leave the house without.
[L S Murphy] Make-up
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Quincy’s purse?
[L S Murphy] Dirt, uncapped pen, scraps of paper – Quincy’s a little OCD so her purse is perfectly organized.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[L S Murphy] My family. Knowing that they believe in me is enough to keep me going, even on those days when I don’t think I can write another word.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[L S Murphy] Coffee, my laptop, and peace & quiet.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[L S Murphy] Adult novel: Shadowborn by Jocelyn Adams.
YA novel: This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[L S Murphy] It would be a short story actually, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. Up to the day I read that, I wanted to be a rock star.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[L S Murphy] Spend time with my family. My daughter’s growing so fast, every minute with her is special.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

About the book:
There’s no way sixteen year old Quincy Amarante will become the fifth grim reaper. None. Not over her shiny blue Mustang. Her Jimmy Choos. Or her dead body.
She’s supposed to enjoy her sophomore year, not learn about some freaky future Destiny says she has no choice but to fulfill.
It doesn’t take long for Quincy to realize the only way out of the game is to play along especially since Death can find her anyway, anywhere, anytime. And does.
Like when she’s reassuring her friends she wants nothing to do with former best friend Ben Moorland, who’s returned from god-knows-where, and fails. Miserably.
Instead of maintaining her coveted popularity status, Quincy’s goes down like the Titanic.
Maybe … just maybe … that’s okay.
It seems, perhaps, becoming a grim reaper isn’t just about the dead but more about a much needed shift in Quincy’s priorities—from who she thinks she wants to be to who she really is.
