However, Raku’s searching for his childhood sweetheart from ten years ago, with a pendant around his neck as a memento, and he can’t even remember her name or face! Interview with Emi Gayle, Author of After Dark and Giveaway!

Emi Gayle is celebrating the release of her new book  After Dark.  She stopped by the virtual offices to chat, and she brought along a digital copy of After Dark for one of you to win!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Emi Gayle] Chief-Mom to three. Writer of two minds. Workerbee. Still in love with the guy I met at 14 and married at 20. That’s me!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about After Dark?

[Emi Gayle] After Dark is about Mackenzie Thorne, a changeling, the changeling who has one goal … get through her senior year, get to her nineteenth birthday and choose what she’ll be for the rest of her life. The whole rest of her life. No take backs. No changes. Forever.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Emi Gayle] One day I was thinking about how my life and career has changed over time. I’ve gone up the corporate ladder, gotten out, gone back in, had three kids, done creative stuff, done logic stuff … but what do I really want to be when I grow up? Well … what if what I’d picked in that first job was it and I could never change. Tada! After Dark!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Mac?

[Emi Gayle] Stubborn. Undecided. Brilliant.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Winn had a theme song, what would it be?

[Emi Gayle] Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lovato

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Mac won’t leave the house without.

[Emi Gayle] Something, anything, to hold her hair back.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Winn’s pocket?

[Emi Gayle] A pocket dictionary – he’s really, really smart

A picture of his mom – can’t tell you why

Pixie dust. He hasn’t learned if they are real or not yet.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Emi Gayle] My children. They really are because their life (and my past time as a teen) are what bring me back and let me remember what I didn’t know I didn’t know.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Emi Gayle] My laptop.

My laptop.

My laptop.

Yup. That’s it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Emi Gayle] Crux by Julie Reece. LOVED it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Emi Gayle] That’s a toughie for me because as a kid, one of my ‘chores’ was to read for 30 minutes every day. EVERY day. And the books I read didn’t turn me on to reading per se. They were just ‘read’. So even the classics weren’t something I liked exactly. Now once I started reading romance, that’s when the fun started, but I was married with children by then.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Emi Gayle] I LOVE watching the DIY network and HGTV. I can’t wait, one day, when I have money, to redo my kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom. I’m just hoping to meet one of the ‘Bath Crasher’, ‘Kitchen Crasher’ or "Yard Crasher’ people in my local Lowes or Home Depot.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Emi Gayle] I’m at all these places:

About the book:

What eighteen year old Mac Thorne doesn’t know will probably kill her.

In exactly eight months, five days, three hours and thirteen minutes, Mac has to choose what she’ll be for the rest of her life.

She has no choice but to pick. As a Changeling, it’s her birthright. To Mac, it’s a birthchore. Like going to school with humans, interacting with humans, and pretending to be human during the pesky daylight hours.
Once darkness descends, Mac can change into any supernatural form that exists—which makes her as happy as she can be. That is, until Winn Thomas, the biggest geek in her senior class figures out there’s more to what hides in the dark than most are willing to acknowledge.

In this first of the 19th Year Trilogy, Winn might know more about Mac than even she does, and that knowledge could end their lives, unless Mac ensures the powers-that-be have no choice but to keep him around.
