Interview with Vanessa Kelly, Author of His Mistletoe Bride and Giveaway!

Vanessa Kelly is the author of  several romances, and her latest, His Mistletoe Bride, hits stores in October!  Vanessa dropped by the virtual offices to chat about her new release, and she brought along a present! After the interview, enter for a chance to win an ARC of His Mistletoe Bride!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Vanessa Kelly] A historical romance writer who loves Sci Fi, adventure movies, Jane Austen, & chocolate cake. I think dogs are the best thing ever.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about His Mistletoe Bride?

[Vanessa Kelly] It’s a marriage of convenience story with a Christmas twist. Phoebe Linville is a Quaker from America who travels to London to meet her British grandfather, the Earl of Merritt. Unfortunately, her grandfather dies before she can arrive and Phoebe is confronted with the new Earl of Merritt, Lucas Stanton. Lucas feels responsible for Phoebe—after all, she’s now alone in the world and he did promise her dying grandfather that he would take care of her. As the new earl, Lucas needs a suitable wife so why not Phoebe? Throw in some conniving but good-natured relatives, a decrepit estate called Mistletoe Manor, a Christmas bride determined to make her husband fall in love with her, and you’ve got His Mistletoe Bride. Oh, and there are smugglers in the mix, too!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Vanessa Kelly] It was actually my editor’s idea. This is the 4th and final book in my current series, which revolves around the adventures of the Stanton family. I was originally going to write a darker book that was a bit more action-oriented, with nasty smugglers and lots of danger. But when my editor suggested a Christmas book, I knew that my original idea would be too dark. So, the smugglers turned into a group of local villagers who turned to smuggling in order to support their poverty-stricken families. It falls to Lucas, a law and order kind of guy, to solve the smuggling problem. Phoebe, a Quaker, has a different idea of how the problem should be handled! How they fall in love and learn to compromise on really core beliefs is one of the driving themes of the book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Which of your books was the hardest for you to write?

[Vanessa Kelly] His Mistletoe Bride. As I mentioned above, I started in one direction but had to switch to a different one. I’m really pleased with the result though, and very happy that my editor pushed me to go this way.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Phoebe?

[Vanessa Kelly] Kind, principled, impulsive.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are three things Lucas would never have in his pocket?

[Vanessa Kelly] Hmm. That’s a tough one. He’s a very resourceful person and as a soldier he’s learned never to let anything go to waste. He definitely wouldn’t have gambling markers, but other than that I really can’t think of anything. He might even find a lady’s hairpins a useful tool to have around.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Phoebe’s single most prized possession?

[Vanessa Kelly] A cameo brooch that belonged to her mother.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Vanessa Kelly] Books and television—shows like Sons of Anarchy really kick my brain into high gear.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Vanessa Kelly] A quiet corner, a comfortable chair, and my alpha smart.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Vanessa Kelly] Probably A Discovery of Witches, by Deborah Harkness. That or Deanna Raybourn’s The Dark Road to Darjeeling. Beautiful and transporting, both of them.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Vanessa Kelly] You know, I don’t really remember. I was reading before I was five years old, and I haven’t stopped. If I try to nail myself down, I would probably say Ozma Of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Vanessa Kelly] Read, watch TV, go for walks with hubby.

Reading Road Trip Giveaway! Win Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton

Welcome to my Reading Road Trip Giveaway!  Hosted by I Like These Books & IceyBooks, the goal of the Reading Road Trip is to spotlight all 50 states with giveaways.  Think of this as the ultimate in armchair travel.

Today I want to present my state to you.  Welcome to Michigan!  The Great Lakes State, we are surrounded by beautiful state parks and lots and lots of water.  Lakes, rivers, ponds, and even a swamp or two.  While this means high humidity in the summer, it also means water skiing, swimming, boating, fishing, and hanging out at the beach, and skating, snow mobiling, and snow angels in the winter.

Michigan has four distinct seasons, and though I hate our long, cold winters, I love the change in scenery that occurs year round.  Here are some fun Michigan facts (to see more, visit this website) -

The Mackinac Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. It spans 5 miles over the Straits of Mackinac.

The painted turtle is Michigan’s state reptile. (There was a painted turtle in my backyard a couple of weeks ago!)

The Detroit Zoo was the 1st zoo in America to feature cageless, open-exhibits that allowed the animals more freedom to roam.  (This is still a cool place to spend an afternoon!)

Standing anywhere in the state a person is within 85 miles of one of the Great Lakes .  (That’s only, like, an hour away at the speed most people around here drive!)

Isle Royal Park has one of the largest moose herds remaining in the U.S.  (Moose!  In Michigan!)

Michigan has more shoreline than any other state except Alaska.

Click below for a larger view of Michigan.  Our state is shaped like a mitten, which is something you will need if you visit in the winter.  It gets cold here!

What else do I like about Michigan?  I live in an area with lots and lots of horse farms.  I am only 10 minutes from where I board my horses.  I am only a short drive from a state park, where I can go trail riding.  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Now for my giveaway!  I am giving away a copy of Courtney Allison Moulton’s Angelfire.  Courtney lives in Michigan, and she is a horse enthusiast, too!

Interview with Jus Accardo, Author of Untouched and Giveaway!

Jus Accardo is the author of the Denazen series, which includes the latest release, Untouched.  Jus stopped by the virtual offices for a chat, and she brought along a digital copy of Untouched for one of you lucky readers!  Enter for your chance to win after the interview.

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Jus Accardo] Warcraft junkie, lover of cheese, fearer of planes, and collector of stray dogs.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about Untouched?

[Jus Accardo] Untouched is written from Kale’s POV. We finally get a peek at what goes on inside his head and it’s a blast! He and Dez are on the road warning the Sixes on the list they got from her cousin, and they’ve made it to their second to last stop. Kiernan. In an attempt to convince her that they’re the good guys, they all go off for a nice afternoon at a local amusement park and, well, it doesn’t go as planned…

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Jus Accardo] Sadly there’s no interesting story to this. I was in line to get coffee and Dez and Kale’s characters just came to me—it’s pretty much how my brain works. There’s no real rhyme or reason to anything that goes on in there. The others developed as I was writing.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three words best describe Kale?

[Jus Accardo] Loyal, dangerous, and honest.

[Manga Maniac Café] What are three things Dez would never have in her bedroom?

[Jus Accardo] Anything pink. Peppermint gum. Dr. Pepper.

[Manga Maniac Café] What is Kale’s single most prized possession?

[Jus Accardo] Dez’s heart.

[Manga Maniac Café] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Jus Accardo] S.E. Hinton, Mary Stanton, and Poe.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Jus Accardo] Coffee, doggie snores, and no shoes!

[Manga Maniac Café] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Jus Accardo] Oh, wow… There’s no way I can narrow it down to one.

[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Jus Accardo] I’ve always been a reader, but S.E. Hinton I think is the one who made me a book nerd. The Outsiders, Tex, Taming the Star Runner…

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Jus Accardo] I’m a World of Warcraft addict. I have an unused beta key for MoP (the upcoming expansion) and it’s killing me! I love the outdoors and cooking, too.

[Manga Maniac Café] How can readers connect with you?

[Jus Accardo] I’m on twitter and Facebook, and I’ve got a website. And people can email me at jusaccardo@gmail.com. I love chatting with fans!

[Manga Maniac Café]  Thank you!

Book Blurb

Untouched (A Denazen Novella 1.5)

Until he met Dez, Kale’s days were filled with violence and death. He was used as a weapon of destruction by the power hungry men of Denazen. He’s a Six. A person with an abnormal ability. Some people call them gifts, but not Kale. Kale’s touch means instant death.

But now there’s Dez, the girl he can touch, and they’re hunting down Sixes and warning them about Denazen. Kale is learning about the world outside captivity and trying to put his dark past behind him. But they underestimated how badly Denazen wanted him back.

When Dez sacrifices herself to save the new Six they’d rescued from falling into the corp’s hands, Kale is lost. Denazen has brought out its best to get the job done. Samsen, a nightmare from Kale’s past—the only person he’s ever truly feared—has come for them, and it soon becomes obvious he has his own twisted agenda.

Kale will need all his training to get Dez back and ensure they make it out, free—and alive. But will it be enough?
