[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Vanessa Kelly] A historical romance writer who loves Sci Fi, adventure movies, Jane Austen, & chocolate cake. I think dogs are the best thing ever.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about His Mistletoe Bride?
[Vanessa Kelly] It’s a marriage of convenience story with a Christmas twist. Phoebe Linville is a Quaker from America who travels to London to meet her British grandfather, the Earl of Merritt. Unfortunately, her grandfather dies before she can arrive and Phoebe is confronted with the new Earl of Merritt, Lucas Stanton. Lucas feels responsible for Phoebe—after all, she’s now alone in the world and he did promise her dying grandfather that he would take care of her. As the new earl, Lucas needs a suitable wife so why not Phoebe? Throw in some conniving but good-natured relatives, a decrepit estate called Mistletoe Manor, a Christmas bride determined to make her husband fall in love with her, and you’ve got His Mistletoe Bride. Oh, and there are smugglers in the mix, too!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Vanessa Kelly] It was actually my editor’s idea. This is the 4th and final book in my current series, which revolves around the adventures of the Stanton family. I was originally going to write a darker book that was a bit more action-oriented, with nasty smugglers and lots of danger. But when my editor suggested a Christmas book, I knew that my original idea would be too dark. So, the smugglers turned into a group of local villagers who turned to smuggling in order to support their poverty-stricken families. It falls to Lucas, a law and order kind of guy, to solve the smuggling problem. Phoebe, a Quaker, has a different idea of how the problem should be handled! How they fall in love and learn to compromise on really core beliefs is one of the driving themes of the book.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Which of your books was the hardest for you to write?
[Vanessa Kelly] His Mistletoe Bride. As I mentioned above, I started in one direction but had to switch to a different one. I’m really pleased with the result though, and very happy that my editor pushed me to go this way.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Phoebe?
[Vanessa Kelly] Kind, principled, impulsive.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are three things Lucas would never have in his pocket?
[Vanessa Kelly] Hmm. That’s a tough one. He’s a very resourceful person and as a soldier he’s learned never to let anything go to waste. He definitely wouldn’t have gambling markers, but other than that I really can’t think of anything. He might even find a lady’s hairpins a useful tool to have around.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Phoebe’s single most prized possession?
[Vanessa Kelly] A cameo brooch that belonged to her mother.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Vanessa Kelly] Books and television—shows like Sons of Anarchy really kick my brain into high gear.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Vanessa Kelly] Probably A Discovery of Witches, by Deborah Harkness. That or Deanna Raybourn’s The Dark Road to Darjeeling. Beautiful and transporting, both of them.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Vanessa Kelly] You know, I don’t really remember. I was reading before I was five years old, and I haven’t stopped. If I try to nail myself down, I would probably say Ozma Of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Vanessa Kelly] Read, watch TV, go for walks with hubby.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
[Vanessa Kelly] Website: www.vanessakellyauthor.com
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
