Book Blogger Hop & Follow Friday December 10 – 12th

While you’re hopping through, please take a look at my current contests!! Everyone needs more books, right??

It’s Friday! Time to discover new blogs to follow! Blog Hop is a meme held every weekend and it is hosted by Jennifer at Crazy for Books. It’s a great way to find book blogs that you might now know about.

Question of the Week:

"What is the thing you like most about reading book blogs?  Is it the reviews, author guest posts, articles, giveaways, or something else entirely?"

I like reviews, cover reveals, and publishing news the best, because they expose me to books that I probably wouldn’t look at twice.  Interviews are fun as well, and, hey, who is going to complain about an awesome contest or two?

Question of the week:
Do you have an under-noticed author that you think we should all know about?

I have several, but I’ll stick with just two.  Octavia Butler writes compelling, thought provoking science fiction, and I have loved every book that I have read.  Pick up Mind of My Mind  for a gripping read about a young woman who refuses to let someone use her for his own gain.  I’ve read it about four times now, and have enjoyed it every time.

Diana Wynne Jones is another author who doesn’t get the credit she deserves.  She was writing fun children’s fantasy novels long before Harry Potter made his ballyhooed appearance, and her books are full of wit and suspense, with very sympathetic characters.  I highly recommend picking up The Chronicles of Chrestomanci!

If you celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, I hope you had a wonderful day!  Ours was very low-key, which was welcome because the last few months have been very hectic.  It was nice to just relax at home, and that is my plan for the rest of the weekend.  I will be participating in the Thankfully Reading Read-a-thon, and if you haven’t already, you can still sign up for it here.

Question of the week:

"What is your favorite book cover?"

This is a hard question to answer because there are so many awesome covers out there, but I discovered one this week that makes me laugh whenever I see it.  This is the second time this week that I have posted the cover here, and I like it better each time I see it.  What are those wonderfully goofy sheep going to do with a cell phone?? They don’t have opposable thumbs! Is there really that much to talk about when you graze about a pasture eating grass all day? I don’t know, but I am dying to find out!  The Quest for the Warrior Sheep by Christopher and Christine Russell will be in stores in Feb 2011.

Question of the week:

"Since Thanksgiving is coming up next week, let’s use this week’s Hop to share what we are most thankful for and what our holiday traditions are!"

I am most thankful to have a loving family, to have my health, and to have friends who care about me.  Life really doesn’t get much better than that!

Since my parents retired to Florida, Dean and I spend a quiet day together now.  We go to our favorite restaurant for their Thanksgiving buffet, then we go home and chill.  It’s very relaxing, and allows us to get geared up for the holiday season.  It seems like we are constantly on the go until January, so a weekend at home is a treat.

Question of the week:

How long have you been book blogging??

I have been book blogging for five years.  It’s something that I really enjoy, and it helps me blow off some steam.

Please don’t forget to enter my contests if you haven’t already, and leave links so I can hop back and visit! Have a great weekend!

Book Blogger Hop Challenge Results

Who I Followed and Why:

I actually discovered a couple of blogs that I really like last week, including Rabid Reads.   I like Carmel’s range of coverage, and she is reading a lot of books on my wish list.  I tried to comment on most of her posts over the last week :)

My favorite post from last week is her review of Halfway to the Grave, which is a title I have been thinking about reading for a while.  Now that I have been convinced, I just need to find the time to fit it into my reading schedule.  Thanks, Carmel!

 Question of the Week:

"If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?"

Yes, I always try to start with the first book in the series.  It is so hard to develop a connection with the characters if you don’t understand them or lack information on their backgrounds.  Plus, I figure that the books were written in order for a reason :P

Question of the week:

What is your usual monthly book budget?

Lately, it’s been pretty non-existent.  With the holidays creeping up, I have been saving my pennies so I can spoil my family with presents.  Instead of buying books, I have been visiting the library more than normal.  Usually, it’s about $50 a month, though.

Question of the week:

Where is your favorite place to read? Curled up on the sofa, in bed, in the garden? My favorite place to read is curled up under some blankets in one of the bedrooms. It’s far enough away from the family room that the TV isn’t a big distraction, and the dog usually comes upstairs to keep me company. It’s nice and cozy!

Question of the week:

What are you currently reading? Basically, what book is that?

I am currently reading three books. The first, which is getting to the point that it is hard to put down, is Enchanted Ivy by Sarah Beth Durst. The next is Empty by Suzanne Weyn, which is an interesting read about what happens after the world’s oil runs out. The last it That Doggone Calf by Bill Wallace and Carol Wallace, about an overworked farm dog and how is life gets turned upside down after the arrival of a new, troublemaking calf. What are you reading?

When you read a book that you just can’t get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?

This is a great question! When I’m reading a review copy of a book, I try to stick it out.  I have so many books in my TBR pile, though, that I give a book 150 pages.  If I am still not caught up in the plot, it is time to move on and save it for another day.

What about you?

Follow Friday Question of the Week:

What is your reading suggestion this week?

I am currently reading Enchanted Ivy by Sarah Beth Durst and The Coming of the Dragon by Rebecca Barnhouse.  Though both took a while to suck me in, they are both getting hard to put down, and I love the premise of both books.

Question of the week:

"How do you spread the word about your blog?(e.g. Social Networking sites, Book Blog Directories, comments on other blogs…)"

This is a great question, and I’m curious to see what other bloggers have to say!  I don’t do much to promote my blog, other than utilize Twitter.  I try to make meaningful comments on posts that I enjoy, but with my work schedule, I don’t really have a lot of time to spend online or I wouldn’t have any time to read and work on my blog.  Overall, I try to offer the best content that I can so that the blog speaks for itself, by providing meaningful reviews and (hopefully) other interesting features.  It is hard to get the word out, so I am hoping to learn new ways to connect with other bloggers from this blog hop!

Question of the week:

Sarah @ SarahReadsTooMuch

Do you judge a book by its cover?

Oh, no! The sad truth is revealed, yet again, about my shallow book buying habits. Yes, yes, yes! Darn it, yes!  I will judge a book based on the cover! Paranormalcy – beautiful cover!  I pre-ordered it! I hardly ever pre-order main stream books, though I pre-order all of my manga.  Hush Hush?  Yeah, cover sold me on that one, too.  There is just something so appealing about a book with a gorgeous cover that I can’t resist!
