This week’s question:

Q. How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen? or If you are still a teen what new genres are you in love with currently?

I read more YA and MG books now than when I was a teen!  I think that it is funny that I waited until I was an adult to read books intended for a younger audience.  When I was a kid I loved fantasy and science fiction, especially Piers Anthony, Orson Scott Card, Sheri Tepper, Philip Jose Farmer, and Octavia Butler (and I still read most of them now!).  I love, love, loved Elizabeth Peters, regencies,  category romances (Harlequin, Loveswept, Candlelight, Silhouette), and historical (hysterical) romance novels.  I am discovering that I still do.

Now that I am a bit older, I read everything!  Picture books, chapter books, MG, and YA.  There are so many good books that I despair about missing some really good ones!  There are just too many books to get to all of them, though, but I will keep trying!  I have also started reading Harlequin romances again, and I am delving into paranormal romances and urban fantasy.  I love graphic novels, too.

I have a question for you – what is the best book you’ve read lately? Please leave recommendations in the comments – I love hearing about good books!

Question of the Week:

"If I gave you £50 (or $80) and sent you into a bookshop right now, what would be in your basket when you finally staggered to the till?"

Let’s see – this is a hard question, because there are so many books that I want, and I am an impulse shopper!  Maybe these:

Falling Under – Gwen Hayes

Discord’s Apple – Carrie Vaugh

Wake Unto Me – Lisa Cach

Born at Midnight – C.C. Hunter

Entwined – Heather Dixon

Stork – Wendy Delsol

Subject Seven – James A. Moore

Shadow’s Son – Jon Sprunk

Pegasus – Robin McKinley

Dust City – Robert Paul Weston

(I limited the titles to books due out in March and prior)

Question of the week:

Q. Who are You the Boy/Girl, instead of You the Blogger?

I’m an accountant at a computer company in Michigan, which is bad because I am constantly tempted to purchase new gadgets.  When I’m not reading or hanging out with my honey, I am hanging out at the barn with my horses.  I like to take naps on the weekend, and my favorite foods are sushi and ramen noodles.   If I ever win the lottery, I am moving to Disney World!

Question of the Week:

"Do you ever wish you would have named your blog something different?”

Yes, there are times, six years after I started it, that I wish I had named my blog something different.  When I first started blogging, my schedule was so hectic that I only had time to read graphic novels, and honestly, at that point in my life, I was happy with my comics.  The manga “revolution” was going strong, there were a ton of manga publishers, and even more new titles coming out.  Fast forward to now, and the economy has cut the number of manga publishers in half, and I have started reading prose novels again.  Now the blog name doesn’t quite gel, but I have been using it for so long that I am reluctant to change it!  Why is hindsight always 20/20?

Question of the week:

Share your current fav television show! Tell us a bit about it…

I have an embarrassing confession to make – I don’t watch TV.  It is a rare day indeed when I sit down to watch something.  While the BF spends a lot of his free time channel surfing, I would rather sit down with a book or peruse the internet.  Occasionally a show that he has on will attract my attention, but that doesn’t happen very often.  The last show that I was super excited about was Babylon 5, so that should give you an idea about how long it has been since I watched anything!  I would like to watch Vampire Diaries and True Blood, but I get bored with the TV so I haven’t made the effort to sit down and watch them.  What are your must see shows?

Question of the Week:

"Tell us about one of your posts from this week and give us a link so we can read it (review or otherwise)!"

Here is a link to my thoughts about DROUGHT by Pam Bachorz, a book that kept me pondering long after I finished it.  I don’t know that I liked it, but I know I liked how it made me think.  The story is unique and very hard to step away from, and it kept me engaged the whole time.  It is also bleak and other than the protagonist, I had a lot of trouble relating to the characters. I still recommend giving it a read, because it is so different.

Question of the week:

What is your favorite romance hero-type? Stereotype wise. Do you like the strong silent type or the brute macho man?

Haha! I love this question!  For my romance reading, I like strong, decisive guys who can make a split-second decision.  Someone who is protective and cool under pressure, because you know my favorite romance reads right now have lots of action and danger to stir up the tension.  If the guy is shrouded in mysterious and a bit dangerous himself, then all the better!

Question of the Week:

Why do you read the genre that you do?  What draws you to it?

I don’t read just one genre.  I will read almost anything, though I tend to avoid mysteries and erotica.  I read for enjoyment, and books with fantasy elements are among my favorites.  I also enjoy romantic comedies and books with animal protagonists.  I have recently started to like YA horror, which is a genre I used to steer clear of.  I still can’t sit through a horror film, though – I have nightmares for years.  Really!

Question of the week:

What makes up your non-human family??

I have a very large dog, and two horses, a Saddlebred and a Morgan.  They are my babies, even though they all weigh more than me :)

Question of the Week:

"What book influenced or changed your life? How did it influence/change you?"

Here is the story of why I have horses, and it relates directly to a book I read.  I have always loved horses, but never had the opportunity to learn how to ride.  After I read a regency romance about a horse trainer, I started dreaming, once again, of learning to ride.  I mentioned this to my BF, and told him that one day I would go riding through a field on my very own horse.  Dean must really love me, because he looked me straight in the eye and said, “You have been talking about this for years.  You are not getting any younger.  Your bones are not getting any stronger.  I think that if you really want to do this,  you need to do it now.”  LOL!  I called about taking lessons the next day!

That was six years ago.  What book had I just finished reading?  Taming Tessa by Brenda Hiatt.  Thanks, Brenda, for giving me the kick in the pants that I needed.

Question of the week:

What book(s) have you discovered lately from someone’s book blog?

Oh, gosh, there are so many that I can’t even list them all!  I love Waiting On Wednesday, and usually hop through a bunch of blogs to see what books are on everyone’s radar.  I also love reading reviews of books that I normally would not read.   If it wasn’t for visiting other blogs, I never would have read The Enemy by Charlie Higson  or most of the dystopian books that I read last year.  I didn’t normally read books in those genres, but now they are among my favorite!

Question of the week:

WHAT ARE YOU PLANS FOR THIS FABULOUS DAY?

I was going to skip the hop this weekend, because like everyone else, I am going to be super busy this weekend.  Then I got an email from my mom last night, just as I was getting ready to go to bed.  Now I feel the need to whine, so please forgive me for complaining here.  I don’t want to vent about this to my family, because I know that they are all going through a difficult time, too.  2010 has not been a good year for my family.

My niece Jen is studying in Korea.  She left in the fall, and I miss her dreadfully.  I can’t express how much I miss her.  I helped raise her, she went on vacations with me, and she worked with me for years.  When she decided to go and stay with her mother’s family in Seoul, I tried to look at the bright side.  She doesn’t really know her Korean relatives, and it’s not fair that we keep hogging her.  It’s important that she learn about her mother’s culture, too.  So off she went, and I have been missing her ever since.

Last night I found out that she’s in the hospital.  I am not really sure why, and my mom isn’t sure why, either.  She’s going to have an MRI today, and I am certain that she will be fine, but still, I worry about her.  It is frustrating that I can’t talk to her myself to make sure that she is ok.  It is frustrating that I have to wait for my sister-in-law to contact her family, and then wait to hear what is going on.  Skype, IM, and email are all wonderful tools – when you’re not in the hospital!

Anyway, sorry for the rant.  I am so worried about Jen, I am worried about my dad who is suffering from health issues, too, and I am upset that my family is not going to be all together this year for the holidays.  My parents decided to stay in Florida, and Christmas just isn’t the same with us all split up.  My younger brother and his wife are trying so hard to make up for their absence, and we have a quiet day planned with them, which I am looking forward to.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent!  I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!!  May Santa bring you many, many books and lots of holiday cheer!!

Update on Jen – Jen Skyped me this afternoon.  She is home from the hospital after spending two days there, and she is in some pain, but she is ok.  She hurt her neck and she is going to start pain management therapy tomorrow.  Hopefully they will be able to get her feeling good again soon, without having to resort to more invasive procedures! Thanks to everyone who commented on the post!

Question of the Week:

What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?

I think that they go hand in hand.  If I don’t like the characters, I’m not going to care what happens to them, and if the plot doesn’t engage me, I’m not going to like the characters.  They are equally important to me, though I guess I will suffer through a boring plot if the characters have some personality.  That’s a tough question!

Question of the week:

What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

I have a degree in accounting, and I guess I am technically an accountant,  though I also do many other job tasks that are totally unrelated to my field of study.  My 9 to 5 is really 6 to 5 (ugh), and you would be surprised by how many different  activities you can pack into that time block.  The only thing I hate to do?  Empty out the refrigerators.   If I don’t do it, nobody else will, and I am seriously afraid of what horrors will jump out of there and attack me one day…
