Novella Review: Snowfall by Mary Ann Rivers

Review:

I am very torn about this story.  At first I just wasn’t engaging with Jenny and her cybersex sessions with C, a talented macro photographer she connects with online.  She’s a recent transplant to Ohio, where she works as a researcher at the university.  C also works there, and at one time he lived in her apartment.  She doesn’t want to ever meet him, and she’s comfortable with her current routine of working, then getting home and whooping in it up with C online.  Meh.

But as the reasons for her reclusive behavior emerge, I was all over the book.  Jenny has been diagnosed with a degenerative eye disorder, and she will eventually lose her vision.  It is slowly closing in on her, and she has already lost most of her peripheral vision.  Her dream has always been to study microorganisms under a powerful microscope, and the prospect of not being able to fulfill her dreams, and the fear of becoming dependent on others is eating away at her.  She is hostile with her occupational therapist, and gives him nothing but resistance during their weekly therapy sessions.

There are moments of overwhelming emotions in Snowfall.  Though it took me a bit to become immersed in the story, once I was it was hard to put down.  I felt so much empathy for Jenny; the prospect of slowly being rendered blind is terrifying.  Her anger and grief were palpable.  And through her emotional turmoil, Evan remained steadfast, frustrated with himself for not being able to reach through her wall of resistance.   I enjoyed the slow development of their romance, and how intense it burned after Evan resigned as her therapist because of professional conflicts and because he couldn’t deny his feelings for the “fiercely intelligent” Jenny.  If there is a happy ending to Jenny’s condition, it’s that she no longer had to worry about facing her difficult future alone.  I know that between Evan’s sheltering love and Jenny’s inability to give up, her future will remain bright.

As leftover turkey and stuffing give way to stockings and little black dresses, this tantalizingly sexy eBook bundle offers up holiday-themed novellas from a trio of beloved romance authors. Lisa Renee Jones gives a dedicated reporter and a powerful businessman a chance to count their Thanksgiving blessings in Play with Me; Mary Ann Rivers presents Snowfall, the story of a woman who confronts a life-changing event—hopefully with a special man by her side—just in time for Christmas; and in Serena Bell’s After Midnight, an explosive New Year’s kiss leaves two strangers wondering whether they’ll ever see each other again.

PLAY WITH ME by Lisa Renee Jones
Kali Miller has spent three years reporting fluff stories, waiting for the article that will launch her career to new heights. When she suddenly finds herself forced to take a job as an executive secretary at a Vegas casino, Kali meets the subject of what will surely be a shocking exposé: her boss, Damion Ward, the arrogant and undeniably sexy CEO. But after Damion invites her to help him plan a Thanksgiving charity event, Kali begins to see another side of the man. And when she surrenders to the exhilarating tension simmering between them, Kali hopes her story will have a happy ending.

SNOWFALL by Mary Ann Rivers
Jenny Wright can’t get enough of her erotic conversations with someone she knows only as “C.” Flirting online helps Jenny temporarily escape confronting the changes to her life as she slowly loses her vision. Jenny’s occupational therapist, Evan Carlisle-Ford, is helping her prepare for the challenges ahead, but the forthright, trustworthy man can no longer ignore his growing attraction to his fiercely intelligent client. Now Jenny must choose between the safe, anonymous “C”—or the flesh-and-blood Evan, whose heated kisses can melt snow faster than it can fall.

AFTER MIDNIGHT by Serena Bell
The clock is ticking down to midnight on New Year’s Eve, and all Nora Hart and Miles Shephard can think about is kissing each other—even though they met just minutes before. Then, as fast as Miles enters Nora’s life, he’s gone . . . and she never even gets the name of the man she thinks might just be “the one.” One year later, Nora and Miles are reunited. The chemistry between them is just as strong as they remember. But Miles broke her heart once before—and this time around, Nora’s not sure whether she can give love a second chance.

Roman Holiday 2: Hitched: A Loveswept Contemporary Romance

Review:

This episode of Roman Holiday is a blast.  Ashley has convinced (tricked) Roman to help her evacuate with her things from the approaching hurricane.  What she neglects to tell him is that her “things” means the ancient Airstream trailer that her grandmother left for her.  She also fails to mention that her evacuation plans involve driving hundreds of miles to her friend’s house.  She is convinced that her friend can convince Roman that his plan to tear down the resort community is a terrible idea. Ashley is so fortunate that Roman is a man of his word, and that after learning he’s been played, he doesn’t just dump her and her beat up trailer on the side of the road.

Novella Review–Play with Me by Lisa Renee Jones

Review:

I haven’t read anything by Lisa Renee Jones before, so I was eager to start Play with Me.  From the first sentence I was sucked into the story.  I loved Kali’s voice.  She’s a no nonsense young woman who knows what she wants, and she’s not afraid to work to achieve her goals.  After suffering a major setback in her plan to reboot her life, she takes a temporary position as Damion’s personal assistant.  She quickly discovers that he’s a beast to work for.  An attractive beast, but a beast none the less! Relying on a strong sense of self, though, she quickly lets him know she won’t let him push her around.

The sexual tension sizzles, and both Kali and Damion try to keep their attraction in check.  Kali doesn’t want to give  gossip to the rumor mill, and the thought of sleeping with her boss doesn’t sit well with her.  Try as she might, though, she can’t deny that all she wants to do is rip off his clothes and play out every naughty daydream she’s entertained, with Damion taking center stage.  The push and pull between them is occasionally maddening, but Jones draws you right into Kali’s head, so you know exactly what she’s thinking and exactly what she wants.

In addition to fending off her blazing desire for Damion, Kali finds herself in the middle of a suspected embezzling case.  Something fishy is going on at the casinos Damion’s in charge of, and Kali’s first hint that something’s very wrong in Damion’s kingdom includes being locking in a hotel room for most of the day with no contact with the outside world.  She’s pissed about her treatment during the casino lockdown, and who can blame her?  Her introduction to her employment at the casinos totally sucked.  Her first encounter with HR had her wasting most of the day while the indifferent staff ignored her, and then, BAM! solitary confinement.  Not a great start to her new job, and not a great start to her new life!

The resolution of the corporate intrigue felt a bit rushed, as did Kali’s offer to expose Damion’s misdeeds and write an expose on the casinos after a chance meeting with a former employee. Despite these quibbles, Play with Me is an entertaining read featuring a demanding man who gets what he wants, and an equally forceful woman who knows what she wants.  Part of the story takes place during Thanksgiving, but I didn’t find the holiday flavor very strong, so if you were avoiding Play with Me because you don’t like holiday themed stories, you won’t have an issue here.

Isn’t She Lovely by Lauren Layne

Flirt New Adult Romance

On sale October 28, 2013

978-0-345-54911-2

The rules are clear—until they’re broken. Lauren Layne puts a New Adult spin on Pygmalion, also the inspiration for Pretty Woman, and gives the classic love story its edgiest twist yet.

“Who knew that pretending you’re not falling for someone would be so much more difficult than pretending that you are?”

Stephanie Kendrick gave up her whole summer to ace her NYU film school screenwriting course, so she’s pissed to be stuck with a preppy, spoiled frat boy as her writing partner. Then again, with her piercings, black-rimmed eyes, and Goth wardrobe, Stephanie isn’t exactly Ethan Price’s type, either. He’s probably got his eye on some leggy blonde with a trust fund . . . or does he?

As the summer scene kicks off in the Hamptons, Ethan is desperate to make his snobbish mother forget the pedigreed girl who broke his heart. While Stephanie’s a stretch as a decoy, the right makeover and a pastel cardigan just might do the trick. She may not love the idea of playing Ethan’s brainless Barbie girlfriend, but the free rent and luxurious digs make a tempting offer. So does the promise of a ready-made screenplay idea inspired by their charade.

But when Stephanie steps into Ethan’s privileged world, the “acting” begins to feel all too real. The kissing and touching that were intended to fool the Hamptons crowd wind up manipulating them. And Stephanie faces a question she’s too afraid to ask: Is Ethan falling for the real her or for the dolled-up princess he wants to see?

Cover Reveal: Accidental Cowgirl by Maggie McGinnis

Random House has a cover reveal today for their October release Accidental Cowgirl by Maggie McGinnis.  How could I not want to share that with all of you?  I love the premise – I know! I am such a sucker for fish out of water stores and, need I say, cowboys.  I think this is a really cute cover, and I wish I could step out in a sundress and boots like the cover model, but I  just can’t pull off the look. I can hardly wait to read this in October!

ACCIDENTAL COWGIRL by Maggic McGinnis

Loveswept Contemporary Romance

On sale October 8, 2013

In her Loveswept debut, Maggie McGinnis tells the tale of a city girl who’s running on fumes—and the cowboy who shows her all the good things she’s been missing.

After being betrayed by her con man ex-fiancé, Kyla Bennett nurses a broken heart. But Kyla’s friends have other ideas and when they whisk her off to Whisper Creek, a dude ranch staffed by cowboys so hot they dim the Montana sunset, all Kyla wants to do is hide under a quilt. Then in rides Decker Driscoll. He’s hauling about as much emotional baggage as Kyla, but when he stands close by, both of them want to stay close—and begin to succumb to an undeniable attraction.

After experiencing personal tragedy, Decker never thought he’d see Big Sky country again. But now that his family’s Whisper Creek property is in deep with a Vegas gambler, Decker’s back for the summer—and spending all his time running from “cowgirls” who come to the dude ranch to score some dudes. Then he meets Kyla, a kindred spirit who brings on a stampede of protective feelings . . . and a powerful hankering to sear her with a new brand of love.
